Chapter 13

Libby spent the next two days organising the salon, planning for the children and booking her trip. Geoff and Sylvia were more than pleased to have the children for a few days when Libby said she needed a break. She made a few phone calls to rearrange dates in the salon and then paid a visit to Constance and Clara. She nervously turned her key in the lock. She hated lying, but she needed to find out where Cheryl was. She was still unsure what excuse to use.

‘Hello, it’s me, Libby,’ she called out cheerily.

‘Come through dear, I’m just in the back room,’ Clara called back. Libby opened the door to the back room and saw Clara on all fours rubbing the carpet.

‘Have you lost something?’ she asked helpfully.

‘Yes, the screw from the arm of my glasses. Damn thing just fell out. It can’t be far away.’ Libby put her handbag down and joined Clara on the floor, following her example of carefully rubbing the pile. A couple of minutes later they were still searching with no sign of the tiny screw.

‘I wondered if you knew which hotel Cheryl was staying at? I need to ring her.’ She gulped as she finished talking and could feel her cheeks redden.

‘Yes dear. She wrote it on the notice board in the kitchen. She always does. This is a waste of time. I’ll make us some tea.’ Clara struggled up to her feet, using a chair to right herself. ‘Must be getting old,’ she grumbled to no one in particular. She filled the kettle and set it to boil. Libby’s heart was racing, she just needed the hotel address. Her eyes scanned the cork notice board hanging on the kitchen wall. She couldn’t see an address anywhere. Eventually Clara went over to the board and stared closely at it.

‘It’s no good. I’ll get my glasses.’ She went into the back room and returned holding the good arm of the glasses. She held them to her nose and peered at the board.

‘I can’t see it. Can you?’

Libby walked over to the board and scoured it carefully. ‘No, I can’t see it either.’

‘Constance will know where it is. We’ll have some tea and wait for her to come back, she’s only popped into town for a few bits.’ Libby thought she would burst with frustration. She found it difficult to make polite conversation while they waited. She needed that hotel name.

Constance came bustling through the door, carrying plastic carrier bags in one hand and a broom in the other.

‘Hello dear,’ she said cheerily to Libby. ‘You’re early, no work today?’

‘Not today. Shall I help you with something?’

‘No thanks, you drink your tea. I’ll have these away in a jiffy and join you.’

She came through a short while later carrying a cup of tea for herself. Libby once again sat patiently waiting while Constance slowly sipped her drink.

‘Libby wants to know the name of the hotel that Cheryl’s staying at. She wants to ring her,’ Clara explained to Constance.
